Superintendent Welcome

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as Superintendent of Schools for the Sunapee School District. People who are involved in our schools are justified in feeling a sense of pride in the quality of education provided in our schools and the accomplishments of our staff and young people. That being said, and, hopefully, continually affirmed, I will lead from the stance that even great schools can get better through an attitude of continual improvement and growth.

I have spent much of the month of July visiting the schools, reviewing policy, budget, and getting a better understanding of the overall function of the central office. In that time I have been able to meet some of the many professionals that make up our district. From day one I have been made to feel very welcome. I am in the process of setting up a schedule of monthly meetings with all administrators, directors and association representatives. I will make time available in my schedule over the next few months to meet with any staff or community member who would like to provide input, suggestions and ideas.

This year the schools will be making the transition to the Common Core Curriculum. This nationally adopted curriculum will help reshape education and allow our teachers to really focus on what our students need to demonstrate that they know and are able to do. This shift to Common Core requires teachers to examine current curriculum and make the needed shifts to ensure that our core standards are being taught. The Common Core is not just about English and Math; it is a shared responsibility for all academic areas. Please visit http://www.smarterbalanced.org or /http://www.corestandards.org/  for additional information.

Another big piece of the summer has been working with Wayne Palmer and his dedicated, hard working staff to complete building projects and to prepare the facilities to reopen in August. Kelly Wessells, our newly named Business Administrator, has been helping with the overall budget and closing down the books from last year.

During the school year I hope to gain a better understanding of the overall strengths and needs of our schools. My vision is to help Sunapee maintain and improve its ability to deliver the highest level of education to each child. We have very dedicated and capable people in all roles and responsibilities who share with our school communities a collective commitment to our young people.

I am indeed fortunate.

Sincerely,

Russell E. Holden
