Sunapee Music Students Perform at NHMEA Solo & Ensemble Festival

-- On Saturday, February 16, 2013, seventeen Sunapee Middle High School students performed at the NHMEA (New Hampshire Music Educators Association) Solo & Ensemble Festival. The annual event rotates between UNH, Keene State College, and Plymouth State University. This year students performed at The Silver Cultural Arts Center on the campus of the Plymouth State University in Plymouth, NH.

The festival is designed to provide an opportunity for students in grades 5-12 to perform solo and small ensemble repertoire. This experience is another important facet of musical training for both vocal and instrumental students. Students prepare their solos for a professional judge who will grade their performance as well as provide written comments. Preparation occurs both in and out of school. Students truly compete against themselves and the level of preparation they are able to bring to their solo. The festival draws its repertoire from the New York State School Music Association Repertoire List which is considered the most comprehensive list of its kind.

Congratulations to these musicians for taking on this challenge and successfully presenting their performances. Thanks to Mr. Chaves for providing piano accompaniment for most of these soloists. Please consider attending the March 6, 2013 solo recital night at SMHS where many of these musicians and others will be featured. This free event begins at 6:30 P.M. in the SMHS Music room and is open to the public.
