Anatomy

The unit on Human Anatomy will be comprised of several mini-units on various body systems, and will end with one large, cumulative test.  This unit will also include some dissection - concerns will be addressed as we get closer to this time!

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
The Digestive System is where we take in food, break it into its component parts, absorb the nutrients, and get rid of the leftover material.  Students were given a diagram and we went over the 14 major parts and their functions.  We also discussed the six major nutrients.  (See attached materials.)

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
You body cannot use the nutrients in food without oxygen.  The Respiratory System is responsible for getting the oxygen into you, and taking out the carbon dioxide.  Students were given a diagram and we went over the 11 major parts and their functions.  We also discussed how the diaphragm works to pump the lungs.  (See attached materials.)

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Neither nutrients or oxygen do us any good if we can't get them to the parts of the body that need them.  The Circulatory System takes care of this, using the blood as a great transport system.  Students were given a diagram and we went over the 12 major parts and their functions.  We also discussed the five major circulatory loops and the components of blood.  (See attached materials.)

EXCRETORY SYSTEM
Burning fuel creates wastes - the same is true in our bodies.  Carbon dioxide is let off through the lungs, but other wastes have to be filtered from the blood and disposed of separately.  This is the job of the Excretory System.  Students were given a diagram and we went over the 8 major parts and their functions.  We also discussed the nephron and how it works.  (See attached materials.)

NERVOUS SYSTEM

The Nervous System is what keeps the whole body working.  It lets us sense and respond to our environment, gives us thoughts and feelings, carries messages throughout the body, and keeps the body functioning properly.  We discussed how the Nervous System is organized, the major parts of the brain, reflex arcs, and how nerve cells work.  Students were given diagrams and notes.  (See attached materials.)
